Contestant 11 A tremendous Japanese talent that has made the leap over to Norway’s musical shores, where she has made an enormous impression.

Sanae Yoshida Mæland is a originally a graduate from Toho Gakuen College of Music in Tokyo, Japan, where she studied with prof. Kat­surako Mikami. In 2005 she, however, moved to Norway, to study at Barratt Due Music Institute in Oslo with prof. Jiri Hlinka. From there she went on to work with prof. Håkon Austbø at the University in Stavanger, where she has also worked as an accompanist.

Sanae has won several prizes and scholarships at competitions in both Japan and Norway, and we are eagerly looking forward to see her testing her skills at Top of the World International Piano Competition.

Sanae has been soloist with Barratt-Dues Symfoniorchestra, UiS studentorchestra and Bergen Filharmonic Orchestra. She has performed at several fesitvals, including Messiaen Festival in Stavanger, Festspillene in Bergen and Engadin Music Festival in Switzerland.

As a chamber musician, she has performed with musicians such as Gavriel Lipkind (Lipkind Quartet), Ragnhild Heiland Sørensen (Soprano at the Norwegian Opera), and musicians from Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and Stavanger Symphony Orchestra. As a member of the ”Katharsis Piano Quintet” she has toured in Norway, Germany, Switzerland and Japan.

She has attended masterclasses with Sergei Dorensky, Boris Berman, Martin Hughes and Peter Feuchtwanger.
